One Law, Three Scales

Step back far enough and the three parts of this collection collapse into one.

A self, a brand, and an organization are the same kind of thing seen at three magnifications. Each tells a stated story, what it claims to be. Each tells a lived story, what it actually does. Each is read by others into a perceived story, the version that survives in the world’s head. And each one thrives or decays on a single variable: whether those three are the same story. We have a word for when they are. Coherence.

It is the rarest thing, and it hides in plain sight, because nothing punishes you the instant you lose it. The incoherent person feels only a low, unplaceable discomfort, the sense that a life that should fit is somehow drowning them, until the body sends a louder signal. The incoherent brand feels only that the campaigns work a little less each year. The incoherent company feels only that good people keep leaving for reasons that never quite add up. At every scale the failure is quiet, distributed, and almost never named, which is exactly why it runs so expensive for so long.

And at every scale the cure is the same, and equally unglamorous. Not a louder story. Not a cleverer one. The slow, honest work of closing the distance between what you say, what you do, and what people therefore believe, until the three become one thing and you become legible, to a customer in a tenth of a second or to yourself on an ordinary Tuesday.

That is the whole of it. A person you can read, you trust. A brand you can read, you buy. A company that makes sense, you stay at. The pattern underneath who we trust is not charisma, or cleverness, or volume. It is coherence, all the way up and all the way down. So the only real question, whether you are looking at a person, a logo, or an org chart, is the one we began with, scaled to fit. Are you the same thing all the way through?

Reading that pattern, in a self, a brand, or a system, and learning to close its gaps, is the whole of the work I do. The instrument does not change when the body does. Only the subject does.
